NOTE: this horn requires a Euro-shank mouthpiece.

This Alexander 103 is quite an amazing player. It has a beautiful, smooth sound that sings clearly in all registers. I'm impressed with this horn's power and agility. I think it would make a great all-around horn both orchestrally and also in a chamber setting. The louds are powerful, and a beautiful 'edgy' sound can easily be produced on this horn, but at the same time it has a beautiful soft sound that projects well and is easy to play. I found that this horn doesn't fight me at all when playing it. It has been professionally cleaned and serviced in my shop, and is ready to play!

This horn also has some unusual characteristics for a 103. The most obvious is that it is made of nickel silver. This is not something I see a lot, but I do know that there are professionals that like this metal over the brass. I think it gives it a slightly brighter sound (though not edgy at all). This horn also has a lot of power - it plays quite amazing! The bell is hand hammered (the double seams can be seen in the flare), and the bell is a fixed bell.

The other unusual build characteristic I found on this horn is that it has a reversed leadpipe. I'm not sure I've ever seen (or at least noticed) this on an Alex 103.

The valves on this horn have been plated at some point. They work perfectly and have great compression. All of the slides work well too. Interestingly, I'd say that the lever action on this horn feels a bit 'heavy' - though not in a bad way. The valves are quick and fast, but they feel heavier than other horns I've played. It is an interesting feel, but I wouldn't say it is bad. It may actually help the smoothness of this horn - and 'smooth' is certainly a characteristic I'd assign to this particular instrument.

This horn has seen some use over the years. There are a few small patches (expertly installed) throughout. There are also some aftermarket braces throughout the horn. I wish I knew the history behind this horn to tell you why this happened, but unfortunately I don't. I do know it was owned by a professional player who was also a repair technician. Of course there are also minor scratches, dings, and general lacquer wear throughout. Also, the finger ring has been replaced (by myself). This horn has seen some modifications over the years, but it is certainly still an amazing professional instrument!

Included is the original Alexander 'alligator skin' fixed bell case in good used condition. No mouthpiece is included.
