This may be the best 8D I've ever played. I almost kept it for myself, but recently found another horn (a Schmid) that I like better and have my heart set on buying. Otherwise I would be keeping and playing this horn! It is a fantastic instrument.
This horn has been unlacquered and has a cut bell. It has had a Chuck Ward valve rebuild (not too recent, but it still has excellent compression), and has also had some other minor modifications done by Chuck Ward, including a lengthened main tuning slide (sometimes these horns would play sharp from the factory), and an amado water key on the leadpipe. There are also dimes soldered to the finger paddles (which are also custom bent down toward the bell). Both of these modifications I find make the horn quite ergonomic and comfortable to play. A brand new Clebsch Strap is also installed on the horn.
Of course there are signs of use (dents, dings, minor pitting) that would be assumed on a well loved, well played classic 8D, but nothing bad at all. Everything is purely cosmetic. The one point of wear to note that may be of concern to some buyers is that the leadpipe does appear to have taken some damage at some point. That said, I can't in good conscience replace this leadpipe, because the horn play so well with this particular pipe. So in my mind, though there are some visual damages to the leadpip (see the video and pictures where I do my best to show this), they do not detract from the fact that this is a fantastic player that I think could find continued musical life on the professional stage or in the hands of a serious student or community musician.
I don't want to make too big a deal of this, but the individual who sold this horn to me said that it was Richard King's travel horn for a time. I did confirm with Chuck Ward that this was one of his horns. I do know that Chuck maintained this horn for a number of years, and I think it can be safely said that this horn has seen the concert stage with the Cleveland Orchestra more than once.
Included is a brand new ProTec ProPac case. No mouthpiece is included.
The serial number of this horn is N48413.
