This is a horn that you won't see every day! This is a rare Elkhart Conn 28D (the yellow brass version of the 8D). It is an N-series horn (N48640) - likely the most desirable of the Elkhart era horns. These horns have the classic 8D sound but with a little more color in the sound, I think. The tone is rich, the slurs are smooth, and the horn is overall simply a wonderful joy to play.
This horn has clearly always been cared for very well. There are a few minor signs of lacquer wear, but this (original!) lacquer is still 95% or so intact. The valves are quick and quiet (though one of them clicks a tiny bit when it needs oil) and have really great compression. There are a few tiny dings on the horn, but no dents. This really is one of those 'near-closet finds' that are very desirable and hard to come by. This horn has been professionally cleaned and serviced in my shop, and is ready to play!
I think the most interesting part of this horn, though, is the fact that it still has the original Conn Care pamphlet that came with the horn, as well as the original production schedule sheet (yes, the serial numbers match!). These are certainly rare documents at this point, as most of these Elkhart era documents would have been thrown away at this point. To have the original ones with the horn is truly a rare thing.
This horn comes with its original case in excellent condition (the only issues are that the felt is beginning to peel away at the top of the case . . . very common, and there are some scuffs on the outside). No mouthpiece is included.
