A video demonstration of this horn can be seen here.
The King Eroica is one of the more famous designs by George McCracken. Designed in the later 60s, it was designed to compete with the iconic Conn 8D. This particular horn certainly reminds me (in both sound and playing characteristic) of a well made classic 8D, though I think with a bit bigger and smoother of a sound. I certainly prefer it to some of the 8Ds I've played.
This is a great horn. It is not a 2270, but only has "Eroica" printed on the bell. I hear that these are superior to the later 2270. It has a huge, classic American sound. It plays very smoothly and beautifully. There aren't any bad notes, and the low range of this horn is exceptionally powerful. This is a great player.
This horn does have some decent wear and tear throughout. There are dents, dings, and most of the lacquer is gone. I have recently purchased some good dent tools and took a lot of dents out of this horn. There is a slight bend in the leadpipe from where I straightened it out as best I could. I had to do some fairly significant repair (which you can see video of on my YouTube channel). But the horn really cleaned up nicely, and plays quite well. I'm happy with how this horn plays. And while I had the horn apart, I decided to add an Amado water key, so it really is quite nice to play now, especially because you can quickly and easily empty the water.
The valves on this horn are pretty good, especially for how old the horn is (though they don't have perfect compression). They are quick and quiet. I don't feel the valves leaking at all when I'm playing, there is a pop when I do the "pop test" and I didn't have to put heavy valve oil in, so with care I believe these valves have many years of life left in them. The horn has been professionally cleaned and serviced in my shop, and is ready to play!
Included is a good but used Conn-style hard case. No mouthpiece is included, but I can send a used student mouthpiece with the horn if you contact me upon purchase.
